Most parents meet the phrase early childhood education and picture a building. Almost none of it happens there. The arithmetic below is the reason EduJobs exists, and the reason a steady trickle of parents write to us asking about teacher training — not because they want a career at first, but because they have started to suspect that what they are doing at home all day has a name, a method, and people trained in it.
The numbers, with their sources
At birth the average baby's brain is about a quarter of the size of an adult brain. It roughly doubles in the first year, reaches about eighty per cent of adult size by age three, and around ninety per cent — nearly fully grown — by age five. One widely used review puts it at approximately ninety-five per cent of adult volume by age six.

After that burst, connections are reduced through pruning, which is not damage — it is what makes the circuits a child actually uses more efficient. Sensory pathways such as basic vision and hearing develop first, followed by early language, and then higher cognitive functions. Simple circuits come first and complex ones are built on top of them, which is why the order of these years matters as much as the quantity.

Even once preschool starts, the split is not close. A small child is awake for roughly ninety-eight hours a week; a half-day nursery accounts for about fifteen of them. What this does not mean
It does not mean development is over at five, and it does not mean a difficult year has ruined anything. The frontal lobe — planning, impulse control, personality — keeps developing into early adulthood, and new connections can form throughout life. What the research says is narrower and more useful: the brain is most influenced by experience in the earliest years, and plasticity declines with age. Early is not the only chance. It is the cheapest one.
Be careful with the popular version of this statistic. Ninety per cent of adult brain volume is not ninety per cent of a person’s intelligence, character or future, and anyone selling you a course on that basis is overstating what is known.
Why parents end up on a training course
Put plainly: you are going to spend the next few years as the main adult in the most formative period of another person’s life. You can do that on instinct — many people do, and do it well. Or you can learn the craft of it, and have a qualification and a salary at the end of the same effort. That is the entire argument, and it is a good one.
It is worth being honest about the cost. An NTT or Montessori diploma is a real course with fees, classroom hours and a practical placement, usually across a year. It will not make you calm at seven in the evening. What it gives you is a reason for what you are doing, which is often the difference between coping and guessing.
I signed up for the diploma because I wanted the job. I stayed because of what it did to the two hours I spend with my own daughter every evening.
Where to start this week
- Answer every serve for one day. Reply to every sound, gesture and question aimed at you. One day is enough to feel how much of it usually passes.
- Sit in on a preschool morning. Most schools will let a serious parent observe for an hour. Watch how long the teacher waits before stepping in.
- Read what the diploma actually covers. Child development, classroom practice, observation, assessment. Half of it you have been doing already, without the vocabulary.
